A gentle antiseptic rinse made with calendula and chamomile for cleaning minor cuts, grazes, and skin irritations on dogs and cats. Soothes inflammation and supports the skin's natural healing.
What You Need
- 2 cups distilled or boiled and cooled water
- 1 tbsp dried calendula flowers
- 1 tbsp dried chamomile flowers
- 1 tsp raw honey (optional, for extra antimicrobial action)
- 3 drops lavender essential oil (dogs only)
Method
- Bring water to a boil, then remove from heat.
- Add calendula and chamomile flowers, cover, and steep for 20 minutes.
- Strain through a fine mesh sieve or muslin cloth until perfectly clear.
- Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then stir in honey and lavender oil (dogs only — omit for cats).
- Apply gently to the wound using a clean cloth, cotton pad, or a clean syringe for rinsing.
- Do not rinse off — allow to dry naturally.
- Store remaining wash in the fridge for up to 3 days. Discard if it smells or looks off.
Tips & Notes
- For serious wounds, deep punctures, or bites — see your vet. This is for minor grazes only.
- Calendula is one of the most effective herbal wound healers — grow it in your garden for a constant supply.
- Omit the lavender oil entirely when treating cats — essential oils can be harmful to them.
- This wash can also be used to clean around the eyes for discharge (chamomile only, no lavender or honey).
