A protein-rich, moisture-forward homemade cat food using tuna and chicken. Cats are obligate carnivores — this recipe skips fillers and grains entirely, giving your cat what they are built to eat.
What You Need
- 200g boneless chicken breast or thigh
- 1 tin (95g) tuna in spring water, drained
- 2 tbsp chicken liver (optional but excellent for B vitamins)
- 1/4 cup water or unsalted chicken broth
- 1/2 tsp dried kelp powder (iodine source)
Method
- Simmer chicken pieces in water or broth for 15 minutes until cooked through.
- If using, quickly pan-fry or boil the chicken liver for 5 minutes — do not overcook.
- Allow everything to cool, then finely mince or blend to a texture your cat prefers.
- Mix in the drained tuna and kelp powder.
- Add a little of the reserved cooking broth to reach a soft, moist consistency.
- Serve at room temperature. Never serve cold food straight from the fridge — cats prefer it warm.
- Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days or freeze in ice cube trays.
Tips & Notes
- Cats need taurine, which is found in meat — never feed a vegetarian diet to a cat.
- Keep fish to no more than 3 meals per week to avoid mercury accumulation.
- Introduce homemade food gradually by mixing with existing food over 7–10 days.
- If your cat refuses it at first, try warming it slightly — the aroma encourages eating.
