A balanced, vet-inspired homemade dog food made with chicken, brown rice, and vegetables. Free from preservatives, artificial colours, and mystery fillers — just real food your dog can thrive on.
What You Need
- 500g boneless chicken thighs or breast
- 1 cup brown rice (uncooked)
- 1 medium carrot, diced small
- 1 medium zucchini, diced small
- 1/2 cup frozen peas
- 1 tbsp cold-pressed coconut oil
- 4 cups water or unsalted chicken broth
Method
- Place chicken in a large pot, cover with water or broth, and bring to a gentle boil.
- Cook chicken through (about 15 minutes), then remove and shred finely. Reserve the cooking liquid.
- Add rice to the cooking liquid and simmer for 20 minutes until mostly cooked.
- Add carrots and zucchini and cook a further 8 minutes until soft.
- Stir in peas and coconut oil, then fold in the shredded chicken.
- Allow to cool completely before serving — never feed hot food to pets.
- Store in the fridge up to 4 days, or freeze in meal-sized portions for up to 3 months.
Tips & Notes
- Consult your vet before switching fully to homemade food — every dog has different needs.
- Never add onion, garlic, grapes, raisins, or xylitol — all are toxic to dogs.
- For larger dogs, add a sprinkle of ground flaxseed for extra omega-3s.
- Freeze in silicone muffin moulds for perfectly portioned servings.
