A two-ingredient swap for store-bought confectioners' sugar. Just granulated sugar and a touch of cornstarch, ground fine in seconds — no corn syrup solids or anti-caking additives you can't pronounce.
What You Need
- 1 cup granulated sugar (organic cane sugar works well)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder (prevents caking)
Method
- Add the sugar and cornstarch to a high-powered blender or food processor.
- Blend on high for 1–2 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides, until completely fine and powdery.
- Let the dust settle for a minute before removing the lid.
- Sift if you want an extra-fine texture for glazes or dusting.
- Store in an airtight jar. Use cup-for-cup as store-bought powdered sugar.
Tips & Notes
- A dry Vitamix or high-powered blender gets closest to store-bought texture; a food processor works but may leave it slightly coarser.
- Skip the cornstarch if you plan to use it within a day or two — it's mainly there to prevent clumping in storage.
- For a subtle flavor upgrade, blend in ¼ teaspoon of vanilla bean powder.
