Janet's own rich, whipped body butter for dry skin. A shea butter base is enriched with jojoba, black seed, castor, and rose hip oils, then whipped into a light, fluffy texture that absorbs beautifully without feeling greasy.
What You Need
- 1 cup raw shea butter
- 2 tablespoons jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon black seed oil
- 1 teaspoon castor oil
- 1 tablespoon rose hip oil
- 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional — helps preserve the butter and adds antioxidants)
- A few drops of lavender essential oil (optional, for scent and to soften black seed oil's strong smell)
Method
- Melt the shea butter in a double boiler over low heat until fully liquid.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly (still liquid, but no longer hot) so the added oils keep their beneficial properties.
- Stir in the jojoba oil, black seed oil, castor oil, rose hip oil, and vitamin E oil.
- Refrigerate for 20–30 minutes, until the mixture just starts to firm up around the edges but is still soft in the center — this soft-set stage is key to getting a light, whipped texture.
- Whip with a hand mixer or stand mixer for 5–10 minutes, until light, fluffy, and pale, like buttercream frosting.
- Add lavender essential oil, if using, during the last minute of whipping.
- Spoon into small jars or tins and let solidify fully at room temperature before capping.
Tips & Notes
- Don't skip the chilling step — whipping shea butter while it's still fully liquid won't give you the light, fluffy texture.
- Shea butter softens and can melt above about 90°F (32°C), so store the finished butter in a cool spot, or in the refrigerator during hot weather.
- Black seed oil has a strong, earthy smell — a few drops of lavender or another favorite essential oil helps balance it.
- Castor oil is thick and can feel heavy in larger amounts, which is why it is used sparingly here.
- Patch test on a small area of skin before full use, especially if trying a new oil for the first time.
