A deeply moisturizing hair mask for dry or damaged hair. Soaked chia seeds form a nutrient-rich gel similar to flaxseed gel, and combined with aloe vera it leaves hair soft and hydrated without silicones or synthetic conditioning agents.
What You Need
- 3 tablespoons chia seeds
- 1 cup water
- ¼ cup pure aloe vera gel (fresh-cut or bottled)
- 1 tablespoon coconut or jojoba oil (optional, for extra dry hair)
- A few drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil (optional, for scent)
Method
- Combine the chia seeds and water in a jar, stir well, and let sit for 15–20 minutes until it forms a thick gel.
- Whisk the aloe vera gel into the chia gel until smooth and combined.
- Stir in the oil and essential oil, if using.
- Section damp hair and apply the mask generously from mid-length to ends, focusing on drier areas. Avoid the scalp if you have oily roots.
- Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 20–30 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then shampoo and condition as usual — the gel rinses out easily.
Tips & Notes
- Chia gel keeps in the refrigerator for about a week, so this can be made ahead in a larger batch.
- For very dry or damaged hair, leave the mask on longer (up to an hour) or apply overnight under a shower cap.
- Patch test aloe vera on skin first if you have never used it before — some people are sensitive to it.
