A soothing, honey-based syrup for coughs and chest congestion. Mullein leaf is a classic respiratory herb — demulcent and mildly expectorant — traditionally paired with thyme for its antimicrobial support.
What You Need
- 1 cup dried mullein leaf (or 2 cups fresh, loosely packed)
- 1 tbsp dried thyme (optional, for extra antimicrobial support)
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup raw honey
- Juice of 1 lemon (optional)
Method
- Combine mullein leaf, thyme, and water in a small saucepan.
- Simmer covered on low heat for 20–30 minutes, until the liquid has reduced by about half.
- Strain through a fine cloth or coffee filter (not just a mesh strainer) — mullein leaves have tiny hairs that will irritate the throat if not fully filtered out.
- Return the strained liquid to low heat and stir in the honey until dissolved — keep it warm, not boiling, to protect the honey.
- Stir in lemon juice if using.
- Cool completely, then pour into a sterilized glass jar or bottle.
Tips & Notes
- Straining thoroughly is essential — mullein's fine leaf hairs are the same ones that make raw leaves scratchy on the throat.
- Never give honey-based syrups to children under 1 year old, due to infant botulism risk.
- Store in the refrigerator and use within 2–4 weeks.
