A gentle, non-narcotic tea for restlessness and sleeplessness. California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is a mild nervine and relaxant — an entirely different plant from opium poppy, with no narcotic effect — traditionally used to ease a busy mind at bedtime.
What You Need
- 1–2 tsp dried California poppy (leaf, stem, and flower)
- 1 cup water
- Optional: ½ tsp dried chamomile or lemon balm
- Honey to taste
Method
- Bring water to a boil, then pour over the dried California poppy in a cup or tea ball.
- Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes — covering the cup keeps the steam (and the plant's active compounds) from escaping.
- Strain well and add honey if desired.
- Drink 30–60 minutes before bed.
Tips & Notes
- California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is non-narcotic and unrelated in effect to opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) — it will not cause the sedation or dependency risks of true opiates.
- Do not combine with alcohol, sedatives, or sleep medications — effects can compound.
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and check with a healthcare provider before giving to children.
