A bright, warming blend for the first signs of a cold — lemon balm has mild antiviral properties and a calming effect, while ginger warms the body and eases a scratchy throat. Reach for this one at the very first sniffle.
What You Need
- 2 parts dried lemon balm leaf
- 1 part dried ginger root, or 1 inch fresh ginger, sliced
- 1 part dried elderflower (optional, for extra immune support)
- Honey and lemon to taste
Method
- Mix the dried herbs together and store in a labeled glass jar (add fresh ginger directly to the cup instead, if using).
- To brew: use 1 rounded teaspoon of the dried blend per cup of water, plus fresh ginger if using.
- Pour water just off the boil over the herbs. Cover while steeping.
- Steep for 10 minutes.
- Strain, stir in honey and a squeeze of lemon, and drink warm.
- Repeat every few hours at the first sign of illness.
Tips & Notes
- Fresh ginger gives a spicier, more warming cup than dried — use it if you have a scratchy throat.
- Lemon balm is gentle enough for children at a reduced dose.
- Make a double batch and keep it in a thermos by the bed when you are under the weather.
