Echinacea Root Tincture

Time: 6–8 weeks macerating · Difficulty: Medium

Echinacea is one of the most well-researched immune herbs. Studies show it reduces the duration and severity of colds when taken at the first sign of illness. A root tincture is the strongest preparation. Important: Echinacea works best taken short-term at the onset of illness, NOT as a daily supplement.

What You Need

Method

  1. Coarsely grind or roughly chop the dried root. Surface area matters.
  2. Fill a jar halfway with the root.
  3. Pour vodka to cover completely, filling the jar.
  4. Cap tightly. Label: herb name, part used (root), menstruum, date.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place. Shake vigorously every day.
  6. Macerate for 6–8 weeks (roots need longer than flowers or leaves).
  7. Strain through cheesecloth. Press every drop from the marc.
  8. Bottle in dark dropper bottles. Label.
  9. Dosage: 30–60 drops every 2–3 hours at the very first sign of illness. Use for 7–10 days maximum, then take a break.
